Skip the Snap and Savor the Moment

By Eric Mueller, Board of Directors Member

A few weeks ago, I looked out the window and saw a stunning sunset, one of the great benefits of living in West Seattle. The sun was just kissing the top of Olympic mountains and about to set. In fact, it was so beautiful that I said to myself, “I have to get my camera and capture this!”  I ran upstairs to get my phone and then dashed outside to make the shot. Sadly, the sun had already set. It was still a beautiful scene, but in my haste to capture it, I missed the moment. And for what? Another picture in my phone? As of last count I have 16,860 photos on my phone. Would I really ever look at it again, assuming I could even find it?

Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10). This verse from the Old Testament immediately came to mind and I realized that this is what it meant. There is beauty and evidence of God’s handiwork all around us. Every night God puts on a show for us, whether as a sunset or in the multitude of stars and planets. Or it could be a special moment with your kids or other family members. God gave us life, a very precious gift. It is short and He doesn’t want us to go through life trying to document everything. Just take it all in and say a prayer of grateful thanks. If you savor the moment and skip the snap of a picture, you have a chance to actually be still and know that He is God.
