Never Give Up

By Patra Mueller, Family Life Minister

Do you know the story behind the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir? I recently came across the story of its turbulent beginnings. The Brooklyn Tabernacle, located in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, and home of the famous 250 member choir, was first built in 1847. It was destroyed by a fire in 1869. Then, it was rebuilt in 1873. The new building was destroyed by a terrible thunderstorm in 1889. So they built it again. The new building could seat 6,000 people but was often crowded with 7,000 worshipers. You may not believe this but, just five short years later in 1894, that beautiful new building burned to the ground in another fire! After that, it went through several locations until it finally landed where it is today in a theatre on Smith Street. (Dana Gresh, The One Year Mother Daughter Devotion, 2010)

Wow! The early leaders of the Brooklyn Tabernacle showed some incredible determination and perseverance. Their example is an inspiring example for us to consider. Are you getting tired? Wondering just how much more you can take? It’s easy to give up when the challenges of life continue to push on us from all sides. In Joshua 1:9, Joshua reminded the Israelites, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified for the Lord God is with you wherever you go.”

Will you joining me in claiming God’s power today?
