People at the time of Jesus wanted a Messiah like King David - one who would accomplish a political and military victory, kick out their Roman occupiers, and restore their independence and freedom. The problem is what they really needed was a Messiah like Jesus - one who would accomplish victory over sin, death, and the power of the devil. Because Jesus came to change hearts rather than change regimes, his own people turned on Him. Two thousand years later, we have the ability to see the wonderful gift of who Jesus really is - the one who has come to set our hearts free by faith in Him, and the one who invites us to follow Him in the way of the cross as we join Him in bringing His kingdom on earth, as it is in heaven, little by little, in the moments of our days.
