When Jesus was baptized by his cousin John the Baptist, the voice of the Father boomed and said “This is my son whom I love.” Right after that, Jesus was tempted by the devil, beginning by sowing doubt in Jesus’ heart about his identity by saying “If you are the Son of God…” then do this or that. The same is true for you - the devil doesn’t just tempt you to sin, but rather to conclude that you are your sin and therefore not really an adopted son or daughter of the God who loves you. What’s worse is that the thief repeatedly sends this false message to us over and over again throughout our lives. Seeing that can lead to great freedom - ignoring it can lead to great difficulty. If we are willing to become aware of when and where we have inadvertently agreed with the thief about who we are, we can develop the skill of taking those false thoughts captive to Christ and experiencing increasing freedom for every part of our heart! This Sunday’s message begins a new short series called “The Rest of Your Story” based on a book by the same name by Pastor Greg Lindsey.
