Long ago, the people of Israel were conquered and forced to live in exile in a foreign land. It wasn’t their land, the land promised to them by God. It wasn’t their culture, their language, and the God of Israel was not worshipped by the people who lived there. They could have griped, moaned, and complained. But then God speaks to them through the prophet Jeremiah and calls them to lay down roots for a time, and to even pray and work for the good of the foreign city and country in which they find themselves.

On this Memorial Day weekend, it’s important to give thanks for those who have given their lives for the freedoms we enjoy in our own country. Even when our country has problems and challenges, God’s call is to use our freedom to do what He called those exiles to do: pray and work for the good of the city and country we find ourselves in. God has a purpose for each of us in this time and place!
