In thinking about prayer, it is helpful to remember that it is a dialogue rather than a monologue. Like a therapy session, the answers we seek are often not given as wisdom from outside us, but as awareness that comes to us through the process of the dialogue. Our Lord taught us to be aware of our dialogue partner by focusing the first third of his model prayer upon God. In those moments as we think God’s thoughts after God, we have the beginning of an answer to those issues we bring to the prayer. In our readings the impetus to pray, comes from a reminder of who God is and what are his intentions for us.
