Why is work so hard sometimes? The short answer is the human fall into sin and the way sin has infected the whole world in so many ways. Solomon was on the verge of giving in to the idea that our work is meaningless because of the broken nature of it and the fact that it seems like the benefits of our work are fleeting and temporary. Jesus calls us to a bigger picture vision of the value of our work - not only is how we do our work part of how He is restoring the world and its people, but some of the impact of our work will even make it into the new heavens and new earth that is to come - our work matters, both now AND forever.
