Have you ever bought a souvenir to remind you of a special place or experience? When the Israelites finally cross the miraculously-parted Jordan River and enter the promised land, they took a stone from the riverbed for each tribe and set them up as a memorial of God's miraculous provision for them. It's also important for us to remember the times when God has worked miracles in our lives - so that we praise Him now and so we remember to follow Him in the future.
